The Serpent in the Garden — The Voice of Division

“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made…”
— Genesis 3:1 (NIV)
After the spiritual creation of man (Genesis 1) and the physical formation of man (Genesis 2), we enter a deeper mystery in Genesis 3—the story of the serpent, the tree, and the fall. But this is not the story of original sin. It is the story of spiritual amnesia—when divine consciousness begins to identify with form instead of essence.
Let us decode the serpent, not as a literal snake, but as a symbol of thought—the inner whisper of doubt that divides the mind from the I AM presence.
Who—or What—is the Serpent?
“Now the serpent was more crafty…”
(Genesis 3:1)
The word “serpent” comes from the Hebrew nāḥāsh, which means to whisper, to enchant, or to hiss—a voice more than a creature.
The serpent represents a state of mind—specifically, the part of you that causes separation between your God-self (the “image” man) and your earthly self (the “dust” man). It is the voice of illusion—the subtle suggestion that you are less than divine.
The serpent is the ego thought system. It whispers:
“You are not enough.”
“God is outside of you.”
“You need to do something to be like God.”
“You are separate, powerless, and lacking.”
This voice divides your awareness from your true identity.
The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
“God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God…”
— Genesis 3:5 (NIV)
But wait—weren’t they already made in the image of God?
Here lies the deception: the serpent convinces man to seek what he already has. He tempts man to believe in a separate self, a dual mind—good and evil, right and wrong, worthy and unworthy.
This is the root of the “fall”: not the act of disobedience, but the belief in separation, in duality—the forgetting of the truth: “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)
The Fall is Psychological
The “fall” is not the beginning of sin—it is the beginning of self-doubt. It is when the divine man (your higher self) begins to identify with the dust rather than the breath.
The moment Adam and Eve eat the fruit, the Bible says:
“Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked…”
— Genesis 3:7 (NIV)
Nakedness here means awareness of limitation, vulnerability, and self-judgment. Before this moment, they were clothed in the consciousness of I AM. Now, they believe they are just flesh, exposed, broken, and distant from God.
But the truth never changed—they only believed a lie.
The Voice of the Serpent Today
The serpent still speaks—but now it sounds like:
“You can’t make it.”
“You’re not qualified.”
“You’re just human.”
“You’re not like those who are spiritual.”
“You’re not really God’s image.”
It’s the whisper that keeps you from acting by faith, trusting your I AM, and walking in divine power.
The serpent isn’t outside you. It’s a mental program—a thought pattern—that must be replaced with the Word of Truth.
Overcoming the Serpent: Returning to the I AM
Jesus, the pattern man, overcame this serpent voice in the wilderness when he responded:
“It is written…”
— Matthew 4
He didn’t debate the voice—he replaced it with truth.
So must you.
You defeat the serpent by rejecting the lie and restoring the truth of who you are:
God in expression. Spirit in form. The I AM having a human experience.
Affirmations to Silence the Serpent
I am not separate from God—I AM one with the Creator within.
I do not listen to the voice of lack or fear.
I remember who I am: Spirit, power, peace, and love.
The serpent has no authority over my mind—I walk in truth.
Conclusion: The Serpent is the Illusion of Separation
The serpent was never a literal snake. It was—and still is—the false self, the illusion of duality, the mind that forgets its divine origin.
But now, you remember.
You were never fallen—you only forgot.
You were never cursed—you only agreed with a lie.
And now, as you rise in truth, the serpent loses its voice.
